Yesterday, we learned how to be intentional about our goal setting so as not to set ourselves up for failure from the beginning. If you haven’t gone through Day 5’s lesson yet, you’ll want to start there first before moving on to today’s. We all have so many things we’d love to achieve, but we also have to be realistic about just how many of those things we can get done. We can’t do it all at one time! If you struggled with keeping your specific goals down to two or three yesterday, don’t worry! It takes a lot of practice, a lot of trial and error, and a lot of discipline to keep your specific goals pared down to just a couple of items. Just remember: that list of 10 things is so much more likely to be accomplished two at a time. Take your ten items, pick the most important two out of the bunch (or if you think they all carry equal weight, just pull two out) and work on those first. Once you’ve achieved the goals for those two items, go back to your list of now 8 things, and pick two more. Continue with this path until you’ve reached the end of that list. Focusing on a small amount is so much more likely to bring you success because it’s not overwhelming and giving opportunity for failure.

Yesterday during my goals discussion with my husband, we had established that one of my specific goals wasn’t something that was pleasing to him. You can read all about that here. This is a great example as to why it’s so important to discuss your goals with your spouse. Had I simply gone on my own and started in on that goal, it would’ve ultimately cause a problem for our marriage. It would’ve created hurt feelings and misunderstandings simply because there wasn’t communication from the beginning. I would’ve never dreamed that Brandon would be against that option, and I’m so glad that I discussed it with him because I was able to find that out. Even after all these years together, we still surprise each other every now and then with our opinions on things.

Crystal gave us the assignment to take two of our specific goals and break them down into bite-sized pieces. These goals could be something that you’re looking at achieving in the next week, month or even year. To give you an example of how to break down your goals, I’ve taken a couple of my specific goals and broken them down for you. One goal is something I want to achieve very quickly, and you can see that from my dates set. The other is something I’d like to achieve over the course of 6 months and has many reoccurring timelines. Not all goals are immediate, and some take so much more time than others. But, these charts should help you grasp the concept a bit more as to how to make your goals manageable.

Day 6 - How to Break Your Big Goals DOwn Into Bite-Sized Pieces

As you’ll notice a couple of those dates are set for today, and even one of them is set for yesterday. I got so excited about this particular goal, that I couldn’t help myself but to mention it to my grandma. We talk almost every day, so she was definitely the person I wanted to share my excitement with. As it turned out, she even offered to take care of sitter duties for my youngest that’s still at home on the days that I have class during the week. I’d already started marking off my checklist before I’d even gotten started!

Here’s an example of a longer-term goal: Instead of just saying I want to blog five times per week, I set a deadline. This gives me better focus to make it to the finish line. It’s much easier to feel like you can achieve something when there is an “end date” in sight instead of letting it carry on forever. Obviously, if I blog for six straight months, five days a week, I will have more than developed a habit and will continue to do so. The six months is just a means of acknowledgment that I met my goal.

Day 6 - How to Break Your Big Goals DOwn Into Bite-Sized Pieces - BUSINESS BLOGGING

When you’re breaking your goals down, make a checklist of every thing you need to do in order to accomplish that specific goal. Then, once you’ve created your checklist (aka bite-sized pieces {red blocks}), break it down even further into the steps to achieve those bite-sized pieces (blue ovals). Finally, set a “due date” (light blue blocks).

It’s extremely important to keep these goals somewhere you will be looking on a regular, or even daily, basis. A planner or app is perfect for just that! Remember to always keep in mind your “hows, whats and whens”. How will you achieve your specific goal? What do you need to do in order to complete your bite-sized pieces? When do you need to complete your specific goal by? And how will you break that timeline down into manageable time pieces?

I’m here if you need any advice or a stir in the brain pot to help you break those goals into bite-sized pieces. This activity can take some time to complete once you’ve gone through all of your areas of priority and the specific goals attached to that. Don’t let it seem overwhelming! Focus on the fact that, once you’ve planned for each area, you now only need to look at the day-to-day picture because you’ve already mapped out how that day-to-day is going to lead you to achieve your big-picture goals.
